Migration Guide

SDK X is a Hybrid SDK that helps you roll out innovation faster by enabling most of the updates over the air that flow to end users without any downtime or app updates. This migration guide will walk you through the steps you need to take in order to migrate from Helpshift legacy SDK to SDK X.

Steps to migrate to SDK X

Migrate from legacy SDK to SDK X

#1

Check migration support

Go through migration guide

#2

Update to SDK X

Migrate code/features step by step

#3

Test the migration

Validate the functionality

Unsupported features

We recommend to hold off on SDK X migration if you are currently using the following APIs/features -

These features are yet to be developed, and we may add them to our 2022 roadmap. You can reach out to support@helpshift.com to raise any query for the above.

Supported SDK Versions

A successful migration indicates maintaining user’s data and chat history when they move from an SDK version to another. We support migration of legacy SDK from version 7.x & greater to SDK X.

Note

Migration from SDK version < 6.x

We don’t support the migration from SDK version < 6. If you move to SDK X from version < 6, SDK X will function correctly, but the logged-in user information will be lost, and a new default user will be created. You can log the current user in again, but the corresponding data for that user will not be migrated. It will be treated as a new user in the Helpshift system.

Update Helpshift dependencies

The Xcode and iOS version requirements for legacy SDK and SDK X remain same.

Automated Integration using Cocoapods

  • Remove the existing Helpshift dependency from your Podfile
  • Follow the instructions here to add Helpshift SDK X to your project

Manual integration

  • Remove all Helpshift related files from your project. These include -
    • Helpshift.xcframework or Helpshift.framework depending on the version of Helpshift SDK you are using
    • HelpshiftCustomLocalizations/ folder
    • HelpshiftCustomThemes/ folder
  • Follow the instructions here to add Helpshift SDK X to your project

Code Changes

If you try to compile your project after updating the Helpshift dependency, you will get compilation errors. This is because some API method names and signatures have changed between legacy SDK and SDK X.

import statements

  • The Helpshift module is called HelpshiftX instead of Helpshift. Be sure to replace @import Helpshift; with @import HelpshiftX; in all the files where you plan to use Helpshift APIs.
  • If you are using header file import statements like #import <Helpshift/HelpshiftCore.h> in your project, you will need to replace them with module import statement.

Helpshift install call

Remove the existing Helpshift install call and replace it with following -

@import HelpshiftX;
...
- (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions
{
...
NSDictionary *config = @{} // Your config
[Helpshift installWithPlatformId:@"YOUR_PLATFORM_ID"
domain:@"YOUR_DOMAIN"
config:config];
...
return YES;
}

Refer to SDK X Getting Started guide for more information.

Helpshift install call configuration

The install call in SDK X takes a dictionary rather than an HelpshiftInstallConfig object. The mapping of install config properties to dictionary keys is -

Legacy SDK InstallConfig propertySDK X install dictionary key
enableLoggingenableLogging
enableInAppNotificationsenableInAppNotification

All other deprecated configurations have been removed and are not supported anymore. For more information about install configurations, check the SDK configuration guide.

Helpshift Conversation and FAQ APIs

The API signatures have changed. Update existing API calls with new ones as follows -

Legacy SDK APISDK X API
showConversation:withOptions:showConversationWith:config:
showFAQs:withOptions:showFAQsWith:config:
showFAQSection:withController:withOptions:showFAQSection:with:config:
showSingleFAQ:withController:withOptions:showSingleFAQ:with:config:
FAQ Filtering by tagsCurrently not supported
Guided issue filingCurrently not supported
Embedded Messaging ExperienceCurrently not supported

For more information about Conversation and FAQ APIs in SDK X, refer Helpshift APIs guide.

Conversation and FAQ API Configuration

The conversation and FAQ APIs in SDK X take a dictionary parameter rather than HelpshiftAPIConfig object. The mapping of API config properties to dictionary keys is -

Legacy HelpshiftAPIConfig PropertySDK X API dictionary keyNotes
presentFullScreenOniPadpresentFullScreenOniPad-
enableFullPrivacyenableFullPrivacy-
customIssueFieldscustomIssueFields-
showConversationResolutionQuestion-Moved to admin dashboard under App settings → Resolution Experience → Resolution Question toggle
enableTypingIndicator-Moved to admin dashboard under App settings → Support Experience → Show Agent Typing Indicator toggle

All other configurations have been deprecated and are no longer supported. For more information about API configurations, check the SDK configuration guide.

Helpshift User Management APIs

Replace the following APIs for user login/logout -

Login

Replace legacy SDK login code -

HelpshiftUserBuilder *userBuilder = [[HelpshiftUserBuilder alloc] initWithIdentifier:@"unique-user-id-746501"
andEmail:@"john.doe@app.co"];
userBuilder.name = @"John Doe";
userBuilder.authToken = @"generated-user-authentication-token";
HelpshiftUser *user = userBuilder.build;
[HelpshiftCore login:user];

with SDK X login code -

NSDictionary *userDetails = @{ HelpshiftUserName:@"John Doe",
HelpshiftUserEmail:@"john.doe@app.co",
HelpshiftUserIdentifier:@"unique-user-id-746501",
HelpshiftUserAuthToken:@"generated-user-authentication-token" };

[Helpshift loginUser:userDetails];
Note

We recommend that on migration to SDK X, you should login the active user again to avoid potential inconsistencies.

Other user management APIs have also changed -

ActionLegacy SDK APISDK X API
Logout[HelpshiftCore logout];[Helpshift logout];
Clear anonymous user[HelpshiftCore clearAnonymousUser];[Helpshift clearAnonymousUserOnLogin];

For more information on User management in SDK X, refer Users guide.

Design and theming

SDK design and theming has been completely moved to admin dashboard in SDK X. Please remove all calls to theming APIs and all theming related files from your project. Removed APIs -

  • setTheme:
  • setLightTheme:darkTheme:

Theming can be configured from admin dashboard. You can find more details in the SDK X theming guide.

String Customization

String customization is yet to be supported. It will move to Helpshift Dashboard. Remove all Helpshift SDK related string customizations done in your app as it will no longer reflect in SDK X.

Notification APIs

The API signatures have changed. Update existing API calls with new ones as mentioned -

ActionLegacy SDK APISDK X API
Register device token[HelpshiftCore registerDeviceToken:deviceToken];[Helpshift registerDeviceToken:deviceToken];
Pause in-app notifications[HelpshiftSupport pauseDisplayOfInAppNotification:YES];[Helpshift pauseDisplayOfInAppNotification:YES];
Request unread message count[HelpshiftSupport requestUnreadMessagesCount:YES];[Helpshift requestUnreadMessageCount:YES];

The delegate method that receives the unread message count has also changed from -

- (void) didReceiveUnreadMessagesCount:(NSInteger)count {
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{
[yourView setTextLabel:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d",count];
});
}

to -

- (void) handleHelpshiftEvent:(NSString *)eventName withData:(NSDictionary *)data {
...
if([eventName isEqualToString:HelpshiftEventNameReceivedUnreadMessageCount]) {
int count = data[HelpshiftEventDataUnreadMessageCount];
dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{
[yourView setTextLabel:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%d",count];
});
}
}
Handle notification

To handle notification clicks, replace legacy SDK code -

- (void) userNotificationCenter:(UNUserNotificationCenter *)center
willPresentNotification:(UNNotification *)notification
withCompletionHandler:(void (^)(UNNotificationPresentationOptions options))completionHandler {
if([[notification.request.content.userInfo objectForKey:@"origin"] isEqualToString:@"helpshift"]) {
[HelpshiftCore handleNotificationWithUserInfoDictionary:notification.request.content.userInfo
isAppLaunch:false
withController:self.window.rootViewController];
}
completionHandler(...);
}

with SDK X code -

- (void) userNotificationCenter:(UNUserNotificationCenter *)center
willPresentNotification:(UNNotification *)notification
withCompletionHandler:(void (^)(UNNotificationPresentationOptions options))completionHandler {
if([[notification.request.content.userInfo objectForKey:@"origin"] isEqualToString:@"helpshift"]) {
[Helpshift handleNotificationWithUserInfoDictionary:notification.request.content.userInfo
isAppLaunch:false
withController:self.window.rootViewController];
}
completionHandler(...);
}
Note

If you are using push notifications, we recommend that you register the push token again with SDK X after your app has been upgraded to avoid potential inconsistencies.

For more information on Notification APIs in SDK X, refer Notifications guide. For more information on delegates in SDK X, refer Delegates guide.

Internationalization

The API to set SDK language has changed -

Legacy SDK APISDK X API
[HelpshiftCore setLanguage:@"fr"];[Helpshift setLanguage:"fr"];
Note

We recommend that you set the SDK language again on upgrading your app with SDK X to avoid potential inconsistencies.

For more information on internationalization in SDK X and a list of supported languages, refer Internationalization guide.

Tracking

Replace the following APIs from legacy SDK -

Metadata

We advise using CIFs instead of metadata.

Legacy SDK leveraged metadata APIs to attach metadata to the conversation (Refer here). Replace Legacy SDK code for attaching metadata with equivalent SDK X code -

NSDictionary *customMetadata = @{ @"usertype": @"paid",
@"level": @"7",
@"score": @"12345"
};

NSDictionary *config = @{ @"customMetadata" : customMetadata };
[Helpshift showConversationWith:self config:config];
Tags

Legacy SDK leveraged metadata APIs to attach tags to conversation. Replace legacy SDK code for attaching tags -

HelpshiftAPIConfigBuilder *builder = [[HelpshiftAPIConfigBuilder alloc] init];
builder.customMetaData = [[HelpshiftSupportMetaData alloc] initWithMetaData:@{ /* ... */ }
andTags:@[@"feedback",@"paid user",@"v4.1"]];
HelpshiftAPIConfig *apiConfig = [builder build];
[HelpshiftSupport showFAQs:self withConfig:apiConfig]

with equivalent SDK X code -

NSArray *tags = @[@"feedback",@"paid user",@"v4.1"];
NSDictionary *config = @{@"tags":tags};
[Helpshift showConversationWith:self config:config];
Custom Issue Fields

Replace legacy SDK code -

NSMutableDictionary *customIssueFieldsDict = [NSMutableDictionary dictionary];
customIssueFieldsDict[@"name"] = @[@"sl",@"John Doe"];
customIssueFieldsDict[@"address"] = @[@"ml",@"This is user's long bio"];
customIssueFieldsDict[@"level"] = @[@"n",@"42"];
customIssueFieldsDict[@"is_pro"] = @[@"b",@"true"];
customIssueFieldsDict[@"currency"] = @[@"dd", @"Dollar"];
customIssueFieldsDict[@"join_date"] = @[@"dt", @"1505927361535"];

HelpshiftAPIConfigBuilder *builder = [[HelpshiftAPIConfigBuilder alloc] init];
builder.customIssueFields = customIssueFieldsDict;
HelpshiftAPIConfig *apiConfig = [builder build];
[HelpshiftSupport showFAQs:self withConfig:apiConfig];

with SDK X code -

NSDictionary *cifs = @{ @"name": @{ @"type":@"singleline", @"value":@"John Doe" },
@"address": @{ @"type":@"multiline", @"value":@"This is user's long bio" },
@"level": @{ @"type":@"number", @"value":@"42" },
@"is_pro": @{ @"type":@"boolean", @"value":@"true" },
@"currency": @{ @"type":@"dropdown", @"value":@"Dollar" },
@"join_date": @{ @"type":@"date", @"value":@"1505927361535" } };

NSDictionary *config = @{ @"customIssueFields" : cifs };
[Helpshift showConversationWith:self config:config];
ActionLegacy SDK APISDK X API
Leave breadcrumbs[HelpshiftSupport leaveBreadCrumb:@"Custom String"];[Helpshift leaveBreadcrumb:@"Custom String"];
Clear breadcrumbs[HelpshiftSupport clearBreadCrumbs];[Helpshift clearBreadcrumbs];
Add debug logs[HelpshiftSupport addLog:message];[Helpshift addLog:message];

For more information on tracking APIs in SDK X, refer Tracking guide.

Helpshift Delegates

The API to set Helpshift delegate has been changed -

Legacy SDK APISDK X API
[[HelpshiftSupport sharedInstance] setDelegate:delegate];[[Helpshift sharedInstance] setDelegate:delegate];

Each SDK event had a separate method in legacy SDK. In SDK X, all events are received in the delegate’s handleHelpshiftEvent:withData: method. For a list of events, refer this guide.

Legacy SDK methods that are unsupported in SDK X and don't have a corresponding event are -

  • userDidClickOnActionWithType:withData:
  • displayAttachmentFileAtLocation:onViewController:
  • didCheckIfConversationActive

Reviews & Feedback

Review & feedback related APIs are currently not supported in SDK X.

Deep linking

Deep links are supported in SDK X, similar to Legacy SDK. Refer deep links guide for more information.
